Senior’s Annual Celebration

Seniors Day picnic brings sunshine and smiles

The sun was shining and the food and drinks were flowing on Saturday, August 13, when around 100 local residents gathered at Mont Bellevue Park, in Morin-Heights, to participate in the seventh annual Seniors Day Picnic.

The event was sponsored by the municipality with the support of the Morin-Heights Legion, IGA and the Caisse Desjardins and it served as a chance to provide a day of fun and entertainment for the town’s senior residents.

The very first event was hosted by former municipal councilor Rita O’Donoughue and it has grown over the years from a handful of residents gathering for a corn-roast, to dozens of active residents who come out to share stories and lunch and to shake-up their heels on the dance floor.

During the ceremony, Morin-Heights Mayor Tim Watchorn presented a plaque to local photographer Chris Beames, who recently retired as the municipality’s community reporter.

A second award was presented to the Morin-Heights First Responder’s unit by Rita O’Donoughue, who expressed her thanks to the members of the unit for twice assisting her in times of emergency. The first incident occurred when O’Donoughue was home alone and began to experience difficulty breathing. Within moments of her call for help, the first responders arrived at O’Donoughue’s door. The second incident happened in January when O’Donoughue’s car slid on the ice and hit another car, trapping her in her vehicle and badly injuring her foot.
“The first responders were very good to me and if we didn’t have them, we would have big problems”, said O’Donoughue.
